कापालिक साधना को विलास तथा वैभव का परिरूप मान कर आकर्षण बद्ध कई साधक इसमें शामिल हुए, इस तरह इस मार्ग को भोग मार्ग का ही एक विकृत रूप बना दिया गया. मूल अर्थो मे कापालिको की चक्र साधना को भोग विलास तथा कामपिपासा शांत करने का साधन बना दिया गया, इस प्रकार इस मार्ग को घृणा भाव से देखा जाने लगा तथा जो सही अर्थो मे कापालिक थे उन्होंने पृथक पृथक हो कर व्यक्तिगत साधनाए शुरू कर दी. आदि शंकराचार्य कापालिक सम्प्रदाय मे अनैतिक आचरण का विरोध किया जिससे यह सम्प्रदाय का बहोत बड़ा हिस्सा नेपाल के सीमावर्ती इलाके मे तथा तिब्बत मे चला गया. यह सम्प्रदाय तिब्बत मे बराबर गतिशील रहा जिससे की बौद्ध कापालिक साधना के रूप मे यह सम्प्रदाय जिवंत रह सका.
कई इतिहासकारों का मत है की इसी पंथ से शैवशाक्त कौल मार्ग का प्रचलन हुआ. इस सम्प्रदाय से सबंधित साधनाए अत्यधिक महत्वपूर्ण रही है. कापालिक चक्र मे मुख्य साधक भैरव तथा साधिका को त्रिपुरसुंदरी कहा जाता है. तथा काम शक्ति के विभ्भिन साधन से इनमे असीम शक्तिया आ जाती है. फ़क्त इच्छा मात्र से अपने शारीरिक अवयवों पर नियंत्रण रखना या किसी भी प्रकार के सर्जन तथा विनाश करने की बेजोड शक्ति इस मार्ग से प्राप्त की जा सकती थि. इस मार्ग मे कापालिक अपनी भैरवी साधिका को पत्नी के रूप मे भी स्वीकार कर सकता था. इनके मठ जीर्णशीर्ण अवस्था मे उत्तरीपूर्व राज्यों मे आज भी देखे जाते है.
कापालिक साधनाओ मे महाकाली, भैरव, चांडाली, चामुंडा शिव, त्रिपुरा जेसे देवी देवताओं की साधना होती आई है. वही बौद्ध कापालिक साधना मे वज्रभैरव, महाकाल, हेवज्रा जेसे तिब्बती देवी देवताओ की साधना होती है. पहले के समय मे मंत्र मात्र से मुख्य कापालिक साथी कापालिको की कामशक्ति को न्यूनता तथा उद्वेग देते थे जिससे योग्य मापदंड मे यह साधना पूरी होती थि. इस प्रकार यह अद्भुत मार्ग लुप्त होते हुए भी गुप्त रूप से सुरक्षित है तथा विभ्भिन तांत्रिक मठो मे आज भी गुप्त रूप से कापालिक अपनी तंत्र साधनाओ को सम्प्पन करते है.

Many people underestimated Kapalik sadhna as a sadhna done for pleasure and got attracted towards it because of sexual factor and thats how it got converted in Bhog marg means the path of licentiousness. In real sense the chhakra sadhna of Kapaliks later treated as the sources of satisfying sexual pleasures. In resultant this sadhna seen from hatred eyes…. Well the one who were Kapaliks in real sense started their own individual level practices. Adi Sankaracharya started revolting these practices, so the major part of this community shifted to Nepal border and Tibet. This remained active in Tibet as it and later come in light as Boudh Kapalik sadhnas.
In the opinion of many Historians the SaivaShakt path came in trend. The sadhnas related from this community kept major significance. In Kapalik Chakra the Sadhak is known as Bhairav and female Sadhika as Tripursundari. And in the Sexual activities they achieved many siddhies and powers. Only by just means of will power they can control any part of body and any type of creation and destruction process via this path. In this Path Kapalik accepts the female bhairavi as his wife also. Their Mathas are still can be seen in northern part of India in decrepit manner.
In Kapalik Sadhnas the sadhnas of Gods and Goddess like Mahakali, Bhairav, Chandali, Chamunda Shiv, Tripura whereas In Boudh Kapalik sadhnas the Tibetan gods like Vajra Bhairav, Mahakal, Hevjra are worshipped. Previously via just mantra power the kapaliks can make other kapaliks sexual energy decrease or increase. By which in exact measurement the sadhna can be done. This is how this wonderful path got disappeared in external sense but still awakening in secret form in various tantric mathas and still kapaliks are accomplishing these sadhnas successfully.
